Quick Overview

Dreadmaul Rock rises above the eastern Burning Steppes as the fortified home of the Firegut ogres. Its caves, bridges and high ritual ground protect a force allied with the Blackrock clan and valuable to the region’s supply lines. The disappearance of Sha’ni Proudtusk and her scouting party exposes the violence behind the ogres’ ceremonies. Dreadmaul Rock is not merely a lair of giants but a strategic stronghold whose cruelties reach the families of soldiers far away.

Full History

The Firegut ogres have made Dreadmaul Rock one of the hardest positions to approach in the Burning Steppes. Paths wind upward from the scorched ground toward caves, narrow crossings and exposed heights. An enemy seeking the summit must pass through a settlement that offers its defenders the advantages of stone and elevation. The mountain is not an isolated monster den. Its mineral wealth and position make it valuable to the Blackrock clan, whose soldiers rely on allies beyond their own fortifications.

The relationship between the ogres and Blackrock orcs is a practical one. Alliance reports describe Firegut forces guarding Dreadmaul Rock and keeping supply routes open. The Blackrock strongholds near the volcano are powerful, but they cannot command every path across the steppes without local partners. Ogre brutes provide strength, while ogre-mages add a dangerous command of destructive magic. The alliance keeps the region threatening even beyond the shadow of Blackrock Spire.

The mountain’s most terrible story begins with an expedition from Kargath. Sha’ni Proudtusk was sent to investigate disturbing ritual activity among the Firegut. When her party failed to return, her husband Thal’trak pleaded for news despite being unable to leave his own post. The disappearance had already become a private catastrophe before anyone reached the mountain. Sha’ni and Thal’trak had hoped to leave military service behind and settle near her family in the Hinterlands.

At Dreadmaul Rock, the truth is worse than an ambush. Sha’ni’s spirit recounts the capture of her entire platoon by the ogres and the death of its soldiers. Krom’Grul, their leader in the caves, kept her for a ritual and killed her through torture. He took her wedding nose-ring as a trophy. The request to recover that ring carries no promise that the loss can be undone. It is a last act of recognition for someone whose final mission should have been the end of a dangerous life, not its destruction.

Across the mountain, Oralius at Morgan’s Vigil calls for attacks upon Firegut warriors and their leaders. His orders treat the ogres as a military obstacle to be broken, yet Sha’ni’s story reveals what such an obstacle means to the people it captures. The struggle for Dreadmaul Rock therefore joins strategy to grief. It is a fortress in an orcish supply network, a center of violent ritual and a reminder that the great war around Blackrock Mountain is measured not only in conquered ground but in the families who never see their soldiers return.
