Quick Overview
Deathwing's disappearance did not free Azeroth from the danger of the black dragonflight. Black dragons continued to threaten other peoples while the fate of their Aspect remained uncertain. No confirmed account of his death could explain away the destruction associated with his name.
Full History
Neltharion had once been entrusted with guardianship of the earth. His betrayal as Deathwing changed the other dragonflights' history and cost the world dearly. During the War of the Ancients, his use of the Dragon Soul against his fellow Aspects shattered the trust that had bound their ancient charge together.
Later wars left further evidence of his ambitions. The black dragonflight's schemes and the damage caused by Deathwing remained matters of fear even when he no longer appeared openly. Accounts circulated that he might be dead, while others treated him simply as missing. Neither conclusion was certain.
The uncertainty mattered because the black dragons had not disappeared with their master. They remained hostile and dangerous in the world inherited from the Third War. The absence of Deathwing was not a settled end to the story of the Destroyer, nor proof that the dragonflight's long designs had failed.
