Quick Overview
Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan called upon elemental power after the Dark Irons suffered defeat in the War of the Three Hammers. His summoning unleashed Ragnaros, devastated the surrounding land, and created Blackrock Mountain. The attempt to reverse military ruin instead placed the Dark Iron people beneath the Firelord's power.
Full History
The Dark Iron clan had left the old dwarven kingdom during the divisions that followed Anvilmar's reign. Thaurissan built his own center of power and fought the Bronzebeards and Wildhammers for dominance. The war brought hard defeats to the Dark Irons, and the death of Modgud during the assault on Grim Batol underscored the desperate position of their rulers.
Thaurissan attempted to invoke a power greater than any force he commanded through dwarven arms. The spell summoned Ragnaros from the elemental realm into Azeroth. The result exceeded the sorcerer's control. Fire and upheaval transformed the land, raising Blackrock Mountain and destroying the settlement that had been the center of Thaurissan's rule.
The Dark Irons did not emerge from the disaster as victorious conquerors. Their people became bound to the Firelord, and their subsequent history unfolded in the shadow of elemental domination. The surrounding mountains, scorched wastes, and the subterranean strongholds of Blackrock became visible signs of the price paid for the attempt. The other dwarf clans survived but remained divided from their Dark Iron kin.
The eruption linked an ancient elemental lord to the later history of the First and Second Wars. Orcish remnants, black dragons, and dwarven rivals would all make Blackrock Mountain a contested region. Its volcanic origin remained a reminder that a single act of desperate magic could alter the geography and politics of Azeroth for generations.
