Quick Overview

Flame Crest is a precarious refuge among the northern rocks of the Burning Steppes, where goblins and travelers gather beneath the shadow of Blackrock Mountain. Although a Horde flight route reaches the camp, its goblin business is open to more than one allegiance. Yuka Screwspigot hunts for her missing brother Ribbly, while Ragged John holds a vital piece of Marshal Windsor’s story. The camp reveals how trade, rumor and private misfortune persist beside the armies fighting for the mountain.

Full History

The road through the Burning Steppes is too important to close and too dangerous to travel without allies. On one side lie the old human territories of Redridge Mountains; on the other, the fiery passage through Blackrock Mountain toward the north. Armies have marched through this country since the orcish wars, but they have never been its only travelers. Couriers, engineers, prospectors and opportunists still seek a way through the smoke, each with reasons that have little to do with the banners flying over the surrounding strongholds.

Flame Crest grew into one of their stopping places. The camp rests among northern rocks, with a cave and makeshift shelters providing a little security from the hostile country beyond. Its wind rider connection serves Horde travelers, yet the goblins who work here are not simply another unit of the orcish war effort. They repair equipment, exchange information and pursue business that crosses faction lines. In a region where a stranger can be mistaken for a spy or prey, that limited neutrality has considerable value.

The Screwspigot family brings a particularly sharp example of goblin enterprise. Yorba Screwspigot, operating from Tanaris, sends would-be helpers to her sister Yuka at Flame Crest. Yuka has been searching for their brother Ribbly, whose trail leads into the dangerous affairs of Blackrock Depths. The sisters’ words mix familial concern with the suspicion that Ribbly has stumbled upon something profitable. Their search links a cave in the Burning Steppes to the distant markets of Steamwheedle Port and to the Dark Iron kingdom below the volcano. It is a family quarrel made perilous by geography.

Flame Crest also shelters Ragged John, a witness to the disaster that befell Marshal Windsor. When Marshal Maxwell seeks the missing officer and his intelligence, John’s account becomes an essential step. A small northern camp thus holds a fragment of the story that the Alliance outpost at Morgan’s Vigil cannot solve alone. What armies fail to recover through patrols may survive as the recollections of a frightened, weary man.

Other travelers bring their own ambitions: Kibler’s animal interests, the inventiveness of goblin mechanics, and the trade in equipment needed by anyone willing to approach Blackrock. None of these errands makes Flame Crest safe. The camp endures precisely because danger creates demand for repairs, shelter and knowledge. Its history is not a tale of conquest but of survival in the spaces between stronger powers. While the mountain’s rulers struggle over dominion, Flame Crest continues to ask what a journey is worth—and what a traveler is prepared to risk to complete it.
