Quick Overview

Tyrande Whisperwind vanished into a river while defending Kael'thas's blood elf refugees from the undead. Maiev Shadowsong told Malfurion that Tyrande was dead, although her fate had not been established. The lie nearly cost the night elves the chance to save her.

Full History

As Malfurion and Maiev hunted Illidan across Lordaeron, Tyrande encountered Prince Kael'thas and the survivors he was trying to lead through country devastated by the Scourge. The blood elves faced repeated undead assaults. Tyrande, unwilling to leave them to destruction, stood against the attackers while the refugees continued their flight.

The ground and riverbank gave way during the fighting, sweeping Tyrande out of sight toward territory held by the undead. Kael'thas knew that she had fallen, but he had no proof of her death. Maiev nonetheless told Malfurion that Tyrande had been killed. Her determination to stop Illidan had grown stronger than her willingness to reveal what had truly happened to their ally.

Malfurion later learned that Tyrande might still be alive. Rather than let the estrangement between them settle the matter, Illidan aided the rescue with his naga forces. Tyrande survived, and Maiev's false report was exposed. The deception divided the very allies whose cooperation had been needed to stop the Eye of Sargeras.
