Quick Overview

The Troll Wars brought the surviving Amani Empire into a catastrophic conflict with Quel’Thalas and the rising human kingdom of Arathor. The forest trolls sought to recover lands taken by the high elves. The elves enlisted human allies and shared arcane knowledge that helped defeat the Amani armies. That defeat fractured forest-troll political power and explains many of the tribal positions encountered in the original WoW world.

Full History

The Hundred represents the human magical contribution to the war against the Amani, not the original war against the aqir.

The roots of the Troll Wars lay in the settlement of the high elves within the forests that the Amani regarded as their ancestral territories. When Dath’Remar’s followers pushed beyond Tirisfal toward Quel’Thalas, they established a permanent kingdom protected by powerful magic. For the forest trolls this was territorial occupation, not merely the arrival of foreign travelers.

The Amani mounted repeated campaigns to retake the region. They were formidable warriors, and their numbers threatened the elven kingdom badly enough that the high elves appealed to human Arathor for military help. The bargain opened a new chapter in human magical history: selected human spellcasters learned arcane arts from the elves so that their allies could repel the troll armies.

The combined human–elven victory inflicted tremendous losses and broke the Amani’s ability to rule its old territories as one powerful empire. Many forest tribes withdrew to separate homes. Zul’Aman remained the symbolic heart of the strongest Amani faction, but the Revantusk, Witherbark, Vilebranch, and others followed different political paths as centuries passed.

This defeat was remote from Tyr’s lifetime and from the later retrospective story of Kith’ix. It nevertheless followed from the geographic development of the forest-troll civilization: the Amani had established a homeland worth fighting for long before humans and elves challenged it. By the opening of WoW that remembered loss still shaped Zul’jin’s reputation and enduring conflict over Quel’Thalas.
