Quick Overview

Dath'Remar Sunstrider led Highborne exiles who would rather leave Kalimdor than abandon arcane magic. After the Sundering, he guided his followers across the sea toward the lands that would become Quel'Thalas. There they built a new kingdom around the Sunwell, even as conflict with the forest trolls threatened its survival. His settlement established the high elves' homeland and the royal line that would rule it for thousands of years.

Full History

The catastrophe of the War of the Ancients shattered more than the landmass of ancient Kalimdor. It destroyed the authority of Queen Azshara and forced the surviving night elves to ask what kind of civilization could rise from the ruins. Many held the reckless use of arcane magic responsible for drawing the Burning Legion into their world. Under Malfurion Stormrage's influence, they turned toward druidic traditions and prohibited the sorcery that had once sustained the Highborne court. Dath'Remar Sunstrider, one of the surviving nobles of that old order, could not accept such a future.

Dath'Remar and his followers believed that arcane knowledge was part of their identity, not a practice to be abandoned forever. Their determination brought them into conflict with the new night-elven order. Rather than continue a struggle that might tear the survivors apart, the Highborne were sent away from the lands their people still held. Exile was a bitter price, but it gave Dath'Remar a chance to build a society in which the power that had shaped his ancestors could be used openly again.

The exiles sailed east across waters still marked by the Sundering and the storms around the Maelstrom. Their journey was not a straight march to a chosen capital. They sought a land where their people could recover, draw on magical energies, and survive without the protection of the kaldorei settlements they had left behind. Dath'Remar's name came to symbolize that change of course: the Sunstriders would live beneath the day, far from the dark forests and long vigil of their kin.

In the northern Eastern Kingdoms they found an appealing homeland, but it was not empty. The forest trolls regarded the newcomers as intruders, and the elves' establishment of settlements led to hostility that would endure for generations. Dath'Remar's followers nevertheless pressed on, raising a new kingdom they named Quel'Thalas. The Sunwell became the center of their magical life, a sustaining source of power around which their cities and traditions could grow. The Highborne exiles were becoming a distinct people: the high elves.

Their growing kingdom inherited the confidence and peril of its founders. They had escaped a prohibition on magic, but their reliance on arcane energy remained a defining feature of society. They also inherited a bitter frontier war against the trolls, a struggle that would one day drive them to seek aid from the human kingdom of Arathor. The refuge Dath'Remar established thus helped shape the political and magical history of the entire northern continent.

For thousands of years, the Sunstrider dynasty stood at the heart of Quel'Thalas. Even when the Scourge devastated the high-elven kingdom during the Third War, the origins of its royal house and its attachment to the Sunwell remained essential to understanding what had been lost. Dath'Remar's achievement was the creation of a homeland out of exile; his burden was that the choices which gave his people a new beginning also determined the dangers they would face.
