Full History
The Highborne who refused to abandon arcane magic became exiles from the night-elven homeland. Under Dath'Remar Sunstrider, they traveled toward the Eastern Kingdoms and eventually founded Quel'Thalas. Their new realm arose in forests the Amani trolls already regarded as ancestral lands. What the exiles saw as the beginning of a nation became a new struggle for those who lived there before them.
After the Sundering, night-elven leaders treated unrestricted arcane practice as an intolerable danger. Dath'Remar and his followers rejected that decision, choosing departure instead of surrendering their magic. Their journey included an unsuccessful settlement in Tirisfal before they continued north. In the lands of their eventual kingdom they established the Sunwell, rebuilding a magical center under circumstances unlike those of Azshara's old empire.
The Amani did not peacefully surrender their territory. Forest troll resistance became an enduring part of Quel'Thalas's history and helped shape later relations between elves and humans. The high elves' achievement was substantial, but its founding carried the seed of another long conflict. The new realm's magical legacy also remained central to its identity, a strength that would later become a target when the Scourge invaded during the Third War.
