Full History
The Plaguelands remained one of the clearest signs that Lordaeron's destruction had never been reversed. The Scourge still held ruined lands, while the Forsaken, Scarlet Crusade, and Argent Dawn pursued competing aims nearby. The former kingdom had become a patchwork of dangerous territory and bitter memories. Even where the living maintained outposts, there was no restoration of the old peace.
The plague had entered Lordaeron through the Cult of the Damned and the campaigns that transformed Prince Arthas. Its spread destroyed farms, cities, and royal authority, leaving undead forces amid the shattered country. The Forsaken's independence created another faction with claims upon the ruins, while Scarlet zealots treated many outsiders as enemies. The Argent Dawn offered a different form of resistance, recruiting across ordinary boundaries.
Early World of Warcraft does not depict the Plaguelands as already cleansed. Their quests, patrols, and strongholds establish a continuing struggle. This unfinished condition matters to the history of the Third War: victory against Archimonde at Hyjal did not also resurrect Lordaeron or eliminate the Scourge's remaining armies. The war's consequences survived in the land itself.
