Neltharion turned the Dragon Soul against his fellow dragonflights during the War of the Ancients. The artifact was presented as a weapon to confront the Burning Legion, yet the Earth-Warder's betrayal exposed the other dragons to terrible destruction. The blue flight suffered catastrophic losses, and the solidarity of the Aspects was broken.
The dragons had been appointed guardians of different parts of Azeroth's existence. In the face of the Legion, their power might have helped close the breach before the world was torn apart. Neltharion instead used the disk's extraordinary force on the very allies who had contributed their strength. The betrayal created a second catastrophe inside the larger war and altered the balance among the dragonflights for ages to come.
The object later known as the Demon Soul survived the ancient conflict and became central to another war when the Dragonmaw clan controlled Alexstrasza and her offspring. Neltharion's ancient treachery had consequences far beyond the immediate failure of the first invasion. The Dragon Soul joined the history of the War of the Ancients to the Second War, binding the suffering of dragons to the campaigns of mortal armies.
