During the War of the Ancients, Neltharion offered the dragon Aspects a weapon that seemed capable of turning back the Burning Legion. The other guardians contributed power to the artifact, trusting the Earth-Warder's claim that it would serve their common purpose. The Dragon Soul was therefore born from shared strength. Its later use revealed how thoroughly that trust had been misplaced.
The Legion threatened ancient Kalimdor through the portal being prepared at the Well of Eternity, and even the might of the dragonflights appeared necessary to resist. Neltharion's plan promised concentrated power at a time of desperate danger. Yet the same device created an imbalance among the Aspects: the power drawn from his companions could be wielded by its maker against them.
