The Burning Legion's assault during the War of the Ancients brought the dragonflights into a conflict that threatened the whole world. Neltharion offered what appeared to be a way to unite their might against the invaders: a great golden disc into which the Aspects could pour a portion of their own power. He called the object the Dragon Soul.
The other Aspects believed the Earth-Warder spoke for their common defense. Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, and Nozdormu contributed to the creation of the weapon, trusting that its strength would be used against the Legion. Their decision left them vulnerable, for the power they gave could be wielded by Neltharion without the same restraint upon himself.
His betrayal came when he turned the Dragon Soul against the gathered dragons. The weapon devastated the blue flight and scattered the others, revealing the true purpose concealed beneath his plea for unity. The Aspects had tried to defend Azeroth by acting together. Instead, one of their own had used that fellowship to forge an instrument of domination whose danger would outlive the ancient war.
