Quick Overview
Nozdormu, the Timeless One, leads the bronze dragonflight and guards the proper passage of time. He helped the surviving night elves after the Sundering by blessing Nordrassil, sheltering them from age while the World Tree endured. The Caverns of Time in Tanaris are associated with his mysterious charge. His place in the original World of Warcraft is that of an ancient, largely unseen protector of history itself.
Full History
Of the five ancient Dragon Aspects, Nozdormu bore perhaps the hardest responsibility for a mortal chronicler to comprehend. The bronze dragonflight was entrusted with the care of time. Kingdoms could rise and fall, victories could become defeats, and generations could pass before a single mortal historian understood why an event mattered. For Nozdormu, preserving the proper course of history was itself a form of defending Azeroth.
The other Aspects tended domains that could be seen or experienced more directly: life, nature, magic, and the earth. Time was different. A moment saved through careless interference might unravel consequences that had made another future possible. That did not mean Nozdormu possessed the power to rewrite all history at will. It meant that his office required restraint, observation, and a willingness to protect events whose immediate cost mortals might find intolerable.
Nozdormu served alongside Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, and Neltharion before the War of the Ancients. As the Burning Legion entered ancient Kalimdor, the dragons sought a way to oppose it. Neltharion persuaded his companions to channel their strength into the Dragon Soul. His betrayal demonstrated that guardians could be ruined by the very abilities that distinguished them. The weapon's use devastated the blue flight and stripped the other Aspects of much of their contributed power.
Nozdormu emerged into an age in which even dragonkind had to live with consequences it had helped create. His duty to time did not grant him a simple escape from the ancient catastrophe. The Sundering changed the map of the world. The Night Elves lost the society they had known, and the Aspects had to guard what survived rather than undo the history that led there.
The most visible original-era account of Nozdormu's power follows the creation of Nordrassil on Mount Hyjal. Illidan had formed a new Well of Eternity, and the surviving elves needed a means of keeping its magic from drawing the Legion back. Alexstrasza grew the World Tree from an enchanted acorn. Ysera bound it to the Emerald Dream. Nozdormu bestowed the blessing that protected the night elves from sickness and the burden of age for as long as the tree endured.
The gift changed the entire course of night-elven life. Their guardians could keep watch across the centuries, while druids followed Ysera's call into long sleep. Immortality was not simply personal reward. It was part of a compact: the elves would help preserve the world against the danger that had nearly destroyed it. The blessing was conditional, tied to the continued existence of Nordrassil rather than to an unlimited promise that nothing could ever harm them.
In Tanaris, the Caverns of Time are associated with the bronze dragons and their elusive master. For the peoples of Kalimdor, the place is a mystery whose guardians rarely explain their purpose. Nozdormu's guardianship explains why the caverns are feared and revered, even among those who have never seen a bronze dragon.
The existence of the bronze flight invites difficult questions. If a tragedy can be foreseen, why is it not always prevented? If an enemy can be defeated before it rises, why must people endure the war? The original material does not give a simple answer for every historical catastrophe. The duty of maintaining time is not identical with the desire to spare oneself suffering; a guardian may be forced to protect history even when its path is painful.
During the Third War, the Burning Legion returned and the free peoples of Azeroth defended Mount Hyjal. The battle culminated in the sacrifice of Nordrassil's accumulated power to destroy Archimonde. The ancient arrangements surrounding the World Tree could not simply continue unchanged afterward. The night elves faced a future in which the blessings that had once made them ageless were no longer the unchallenged foundation of their civilization.
By the time the Horde and Alliance establish their new frontiers, Nozdormu remains an ancient guardian whose work is known only in fragments. What matters is the continuity of his charge: while mortals measure the aftermath of Hyjal in years and losses, the bronze dragonflight watches the history in which those lives unfolded.
Nozdormu stands as a reminder that some of the world's most consequential guardians are seldom present in the stories told by kings. They defend something more fragile than a border and harder to restore than a city wall: the order that allows the world to have a history at all.
