Full History
Magatha Grimtotem commanded one of the tauren's sternest factions while Cairne Bloodhoof governed from Thunder Bluff. Her authority followed the death of her husband, after which the Grimtotem warriors looked to her leadership. Stories surrounding that death were colored by suspicion, but suspicion alone did not establish what happened. What was unmistakable was Magatha's growing influence within the newly united tauren.
The original manual portrays Magatha as powerful in shamanic practice and long accustomed to seeking prestige. It also describes the Grimtotem belief that their matriarch would restore territory they regarded as ancestral and drive away peoples they considered inferior. Those ambitions gave the clan a sharply different outlook from Cairne's desire for peace and security on the plains. Magatha's following was therefore more than a family faction: it represented a rival conception of the tauren's future.
After the tauren helped Thrall's forces and established themselves in Mulgore, an internal dispute remained. Magatha was a figure with warriors at her command and a claim to political authority of her own, even while Cairne continued to lead the greater nation. Nothing in the early account proves the rumors about her husband's death. Her documented leadership and ambitions are sufficient to show why unity at Thunder Bluff was more precarious than it first appeared.
