Quick Overview
Sargeras began as the titans' champion against demonic threats but rejected the purpose he had sworn to defend. By assembling the Burning Legion, he turned the powers he once hunted into an army of conquest. That betrayal lay behind the ancient invasion through the Well of Eternity and the demonic menace that returned to Azeroth in later wars.
Full History
Sargeras was appointed to oppose the demons that threatened the worlds ordered by the titans, yet his long struggle ended in rejection of the Pantheon's purpose. The warrior who had once defended creation assembled the Burning Legion to ravage it. His change of allegiance transformed a cosmic conflict into a threat that would reach Azeroth across the Great Dark.
The titans traveled between worlds, giving form and order to places scarred by primordial forces. Sargeras served as their champion against demonic enemies, but the original historical account portrays his encounters with evil as the beginning of a collapse in conviction. Instead of maintaining the Pantheon's work, he gathered the creatures he had been charged to fight and turned their strength toward conquest. The Legion's victories and the fear of its return would shape later ages.
Azeroth's ancient night-elven empire eventually offered the Legion its opportunity through the Well of Eternity. Although the attempted arrival of Sargeras was halted, the ruin left by the invasion remade the world. The story does not end with a defeated or absent general; Sargeras remained the name behind successive demonic threats and the corruption that helped propel the Horde toward the human kingdoms. His betrayal gave distant wars a common and ancient source.
