Quick Overview
The titans of the Pantheon crossed the Great Dark in search of worlds to bring into order. Among their number, Sargeras was entrusted with fighting the demons that threatened that work. Their far-reaching mission became part of Azeroth's oldest history, even though the greatest danger to the world would eventually arise from one of their own.
Full History
Across the Great Dark Beyond, the titans traveled as an organized Pantheon of immensely powerful beings. Where they encountered worlds, they worked to establish order, shaping environments and opposing forces that resisted their designs. Their journeys belong to an era so remote that the mortal civilizations later founded on Azeroth had no part in them. Nevertheless, those deeds left marks that would survive into the age of humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs.
The Pantheon's task was never simply a peaceful act of creation. Demons were an enduring threat, and the titan Sargeras became the Pantheon's chosen champion in its struggle against them. His long warfare exposed him to forces that would eventually overturn his loyalty. The conflict between the mission to order worlds and the beings who delighted in their destruction thus lay at the heart of the titans' story well before Azeroth became a battlefield of the Burning Legion.
When the titans came to Azeroth, their adversaries included the Old Gods and the elemental powers that dominated the world. The original history credits the titans with overcoming those threats, binding dangerous enemies, and reshaping the land. Their legacy is remembered not merely in distant legend but in the world's ancient structures and in the charges conferred upon the dragon Aspects. These acts established an ordering whose effects persisted through the subsequent upheavals of Azeroth's history.
The tragedy of the Pantheon was that its champion eventually abandoned its purpose. Sargeras founded the Burning Legion and turned the strength of a former guardian toward the conquest of worlds. Azeroth would confront that reversal in the War of the Ancients and again through Medivh's corruption and the Third War. To understand those invasions, one must first understand that the same titan history produced both the world's ancient protectors and its most dangerous enemy.
