Quick Overview

Azeroth's oldest surviving histories do not begin with a witnessed creation of the universe. They describe the Great Dark, the titans who traveled it, and ancient forces already struggling over worlds. What came before those powers remains an open question rather than a settled account of the world's birth.

Full History

There was a time before the kingdoms of men, the rise of the night elves, or even the ordering of Azeroth by the titans. The earliest historical accounts preserved in Warcraft describe a cosmos that already contains worlds, mighty wandering beings, and dangers beyond any mortal civilization. They do not present an eyewitness account of how the universe itself first came into existence. This absence matters: the beginning of the story is not necessarily the beginning of creation.

Within that immense darkness the titans of the Pantheon traveled from world to world. Their concern was order, and their works reshaped the environments and inhabitants of the places they visited. Yet the same histories recount demons, destructive powers, and the eventual rebellion of the titan champion Sargeras. These are accounts of actions in an already existing cosmos, not a comprehensive explanation of its first cause. Even their enormous scope leaves the question of ultimate origins unanswered.

Azeroth's own ancient history enters this wider account through the Old Gods, the elemental lords, and the titans' struggle to bring order to the world. Much later, the kaldorei would build their civilization around a source of arcane power, and the Burning Legion would cross the distances between worlds to assault it. Each of these events added new knowledge of the universe's inhabitants without settling precisely how everything began.

The distinction between known history and speculation is especially important at this earliest point. In-world scholars, priests, and rival peoples may describe their own sacred beginnings, but those traditions need not amount to a universal chronology.
