Quick Overview

The orcs' search for timber in Ashenvale brought the Warsong clan into a war with the night elves and their forest guardian Cenarius. Grom Hellscream answered resistance with violence and accepted demonic blood that restored the clan's old enslavement. Cenarius died at the hands of the corrupted Warsong, leaving a wound in relations between the newcomers and Kalimdor's ancient inhabitants. Grom later helped break the blood curse, but freedom from Mannoroth could not undo what had happened in the forest.

Full History

The Warsong clan's harvest of timber in Ashenvale brought Grom Hellscream into conflict with Cenarius and the night elves defending the forest. The struggle became far darker when the Warsong accepted demonic blood and gained strength at the price of renewed enslavement. Cenarius was killed by the corrupted orcs. The incident joined the New Horde's search for a home to a grave injury inflicted upon Kalimdor's ancient guardians.

Thrall had brought the orcs west to escape the old cycles of war, but their need for resources brought them into lands sacred to the night elves. The Warsong responded violently when defenders opposed the cutting of trees. Mannoroth's corrupting influence offered an immediate advantage against powerful enemies. In drinking from the tainted source, the orcs repeated the bargain that had once subjected their people to the Burning Legion.

Grom's later confrontation with Mannoroth would free the orcs from the blood curse, but it could not reverse Cenarius's death. The Ashenvale campaign matters because it exposes the costs of renewal when a displaced people takes resources without understanding its neighbors' claims. It also shows how the Legion could exploit ordinary conflict to reopen older wounds within the Horde.
