Grom Hellscream and the Warsong clan killed Cenarius after drinking waters corrupted by demonic power. The victory removed a powerful guardian of Ashenvale but restored the orcs' connection to the very forces that had enslaved the old Horde. It was triumph bought at a price that threatened everything Thrall wanted his people to become.
The conflict began when Warsong logging brought orcish axes into forests defended by the night elves. Cenarius's resistance proved too strong for ordinary warriors, and Grom was offered strength through a demonic source. The power let the Warsong confront the demigod, but the transformation showed that the hunger for victory could override knowledge of the Horde's own history. The same enemy behind earlier orcish corruption was again able to exploit their desperation.
Thrall later fought to free Grom from demonic control, and Grom's final struggle against Mannoroth would end the blood curse at the cost of his life. Cenarius's death, however, remained a terrible loss for the night elves. The incident helps explain both the fragile morality of the new Horde and the mistrust it encountered among Kalimdor's ancient guardians.
