Quick Overview
Medivh's corruption was confronted at Karazhan by Khadgar, Garona, and Anduin Lothar. The death of the Last Guardian ended his immediate role in the conspiracy that opened the Dark Portal. It could not close the war that his actions had already brought upon Stormwind and the wider Eastern Kingdoms.
Full History
The tower of Karazhan had been the home of Medivh, the mage who inherited the vast powers of the Guardian of Tirisfal. Such power should have protected Azeroth from the Burning Legion. Instead, Sargeras's hidden influence had compromised the Guardian, and Medivh's dealings with Gul'dan contributed to opening a gateway for the orcish Horde. As raids spread through the kingdom, the need to confront him became impossible to evade.
Khadgar had studied within Medivh's tower and seen unsettling signs of the Guardian's condition. Garona brought knowledge tied to Gul'dan's world and the Horde's internal power. With Anduin Lothar, whose duty was to defend the kingdom from the invaders, they approached the crisis from three different positions. Their alliance was extraordinary because an orc connected to the Horde and humans serving Stormwind faced an enemy whose importance surpassed their immediate division.
The confrontation ended with Medivh's defeat and death. The removal of the corrupted Guardian was a necessary victory, but it came after the Dark Portal had become a functioning path between worlds. Orc armies were already in Azeroth, and the political and military strength of Stormwind remained in danger. The kingdom could not simply return to peace after losing the mage who had betrayed its defense.
The Last Guardian's fall illustrates how the long struggle against the Legion reached into mortal institutions created to resist it. Aegwynn's hidden mistake had compromised her son; the secret order's vast power had become a means of invasion. Medivh's later role as a prophetic guide in the Third War belongs to a separate chapter, but his death at Karazhan remains the decisive reckoning with the corruption that opened the First War.
