Quick Overview
Queen Azshara's Highborne turned their dependence on the Well of Eternity into an invitation to the Burning Legion. Her adviser Xavius helped sustain the contact, believing demonic powers would enrich the court rather than destroy it. The gateway forced the kaldorei to fight both invaders and their own rulers, leading toward the war's ruinous conclusion.
Full History
Xavius stood close to Queen Azshara as the Highborne poured the Well of Eternity's power into a gateway for beings beyond Azeroth. What his court regarded as the arrival of exalted allies was the opening of the Burning Legion's invasion. By helping prepare a passage for Sargeras, the queen's adviser placed the heart of the night elven empire in the path of destruction.
The Highborne had long drawn on the Well for the power that upheld Azshara's splendid capital and their privileged place within kaldorei society. Their experiments reached a point at which magic no longer merely served the empire: it offered the Legion a way into it. Xavius's position gave him influence over the spellcasters sustaining that contact and over how the queen understood the powers answering from the Great Dark.
Demons emerging through the gateway turned the empire's dependence on arcane power against it. Resistance grew among night elves who had once lived under Azshara's rule, while the Highborne court continued to serve the invaders. Xavius's role mattered beyond his own fate: the gateway he fostered made an internal division of the kaldorei into a war for the survival of the world. The eventual closing of that path would devastate the Well and the land around it.
