Full History
The Dragonmaw clan held Alexstrasza captive at Grim Batol and used her offspring as war dragons for the Horde. What should have been the life-giving power of the red dragonflight became a weapon in the Second War. The captivity was a crime against the Dragonqueen and a grim advantage for the armies seeking to conquer the northern kingdoms.
Alexstrasza had been one of the great Aspects appointed to guard Azeroth. Her imprisonment drew a being whose concerns spanned ages into an immediate mortal war. Dragonmaw handlers controlled young dragons that the Horde could unleash against Alliance defenders and ships. The result changed the balance of fighting in the air and turned the suffering of a dragon family into an instrument of military power.
The original-era story connects the captivity with the ancient Dragon Soul, an artifact born of Neltharion's betrayal. That history matters because the Second War did not invent the means of dragon domination out of nowhere: an older catastrophe made the new abuse possible. Alexstrasza's captivity remained one of the great injuries of the period until later events at Grim Batol brought a reckoning.
