Full History
Thrall grew up under Aedelas Blackmoore, the human officer who had discovered him after the murder of Durotan and Draka. His education and training were intended to serve Blackmoore's ambitions, not Thrall's freedom. The young orc learned much about human society while remaining cut off from his own ancestry. Escaping captivity therefore left him with a question beyond where to hide: he needed to discover who the orcs had been before the wars that made them feared.
Among the first major figures he encountered was Grom Hellscream of the Warsong clan, whose warriors remained outside the system of camps. Grom represented fierce resistance and a continuing connection to the Horde's martial identity. Thrall also learned of the Frostwolves, the clan that had refused the full surrender to Gul'dan's corruption. The two encounters offered contrasting accounts of what it meant to be an orc after defeat.
With the Frostwolves he discovered the history of his parents and the shamanic traditions they had defended. Drek'Thar helped guide him toward spiritual practices that had survived despite the Legion's influence. Thrall's identity became rooted in something older than Blackhand's Horde or the human camps. He could understand his people as descendants of independent clans rather than as a defeated army destined to remain prisoners.
Armed with that knowledge, Thrall began to work toward the liberation of the camps. His later leadership combined the military resolve exemplified by Grom, the older values preserved by the Frostwolves, and a knowledge of humans that few clan chieftains possessed. The journey from Durnholde to his ancestral people prepared him to build a New Horde capable of choosing its own purposes.
