The Scarlet Crusade took shape among survivors and former defenders of Lordaeron after the Scourge destroyed the kingdom they had served. Its declared purpose was to combat the undead. Over time, suspicion and zealotry reshaped that mission, making its members dangerous to people they regarded as corrupted. Their growth contributed another armed faction to the shattered northern lands.
Lordaeron's collapse left soldiers and holy warriors without the monarchy and institutions that had previously directed them. Organizing into crusading groups gave some survivors a renewed purpose amid plague and ruin. The Scarlet movement occupied fortified sites and became a recognizable power in Tirisfal and the Plaguelands. Yet its intolerance divided it from organizations such as the Argent Dawn, which sought assistance across racial and political boundaries.
The early sources establish the order's origins among the catastrophe's survivors and its militant character. They do not establish every private founding conversation or the precise motives of each early commander, so those should not be invented. The Crusade's significance is already clear: in the aftermath of the Scourge, the living themselves became divided over whom to trust and how far the struggle against undeath should go.
