Quick Overview
Kel'Thuzad answered the Lich King's call and organized the Cult of the Damned in Lordaeron. The cult gave Ner'zhul a foothold among the living, preparing the spread of plague through towns and villages. Its work transformed a distant undead menace in Northrend into a crisis at the heart of a human kingdom.
Full History
The Lich King's powers first grew in the cold wastes of Northrend, where he gathered undead soldiers and overcame rivals such as the nerubians. To weaken the living kingdoms farther south, however, he needed servants who could work within their society. Kel'Thuzad, a mage fascinated by necromantic power, responded to the call. His allegiance opened a path by which the Lich King's ambitions could be carried into Lordaeron before its rulers recognized the scale of the danger.
Kel'Thuzad created the Cult of the Damned, recruiting followers prepared to serve the undead cause while still moving among living communities. The cult helped distribute the plague and organize the conditions for mass death and reanimation. Its methods attacked the ordinary systems that sustained the kingdom, including food supplies and local trust. Soldiers guarding the border against invasion could not easily protect every village from a disease spread by people already living within it.
Prince Arthas Menethil and Jaina Proudmoore pursued the growing threat, uncovering the cult's connection to the plague. Arthas eventually killed Kel'Thuzad, but that death did not end the movement. The spreading disease and the Lich King's plans drew the prince farther from the duties he had sworn to uphold. After his corruption, Arthas would bring Kel'Thuzad back as a lich and use him in the Scourge's war against the living.
The cult's formation is a crucial step in Lordaeron's fall. The Scourge did not arrive solely as an army marching from Northrend; it was prepared by mortal conspirators who introduced death into the life of the kingdom itself. Kel'Thuzad became one of the most consequential agents of that strategy. His organization made the plague politically and militarily devastating long before the undead banners openly occupied Lordaeron's ruined cities.
