Quick Overview
The battle at Mount Hyjal brought humans, orcs, and night elves into a defense that none could have mounted alone. Jaina Proudmoore and Thrall helped delay Archimonde's advance toward Nordrassil while Malfurion prepared a different answer to the demon's power. At the World Tree, the forest's wisps answered his summons and destroyed Archimonde. Their sacrifice ended the immediate invasion but cost the night elves Nordrassil's ancient blessings.
Full History
Archimonde led the Burning Legion toward Mount Hyjal to seize the power of the Well of Eternity beneath Nordrassil. The armies he confronted had recently been enemies. Jaina's refugees remembered the Horde's wars against humanity, while Thrall's orcs sought a new home in Kalimdor. The night elves, whose forests had been invaded by those same newcomers, had little reason to trust either group.
The danger forced a new choice. Under the guidance of Medivh and Malfurion Stormrage, the defenders agreed to resist the Legion together. Jaina's humans and Thrall's Horde held positions along the approaches to the mountain, buying time through battles they could not expect to win outright. Their stand slowed Archimonde as he pressed toward the World Tree.
Malfurion prepared to turn the forest itself against the invader. The wisps of ancient night elven spirits gathered in answer to his call. As Archimonde reached Nordrassil, they converged on the demon in a devastating surge that destroyed him and shattered the Legion's assault.
Azeroth survived, but the victory marked an ending as well as a rescue. Nordrassil's enchantments were lost, and the night elves could no longer rely on the immortality that had defined their lives since the Sundering. The three peoples had stopped the Legion, yet each had entered a world permanently changed by the alliance.
