Quick Overview
Arthas brought Kel'Thuzad's remains to the Sunwell in Quel'Thalas and used its power to restore the necromancer as a lich. The ritual required the Scourge to break through the defenses of the high-elven kingdom. It transformed a sacred source of magic into the instrument of a new disaster for the living.
Full History
Kel'Thuzad had served the Lich King through the Cult of the Damned before Prince Arthas killed him during the struggle against the plague in Lordaeron. Death did not remove him from the Scourge's plans. After Arthas claimed Frostmourne and returned as a death knight, the undead army carried out a mission to restore the necromancer in a far more powerful form. The place chosen for the resurrection was the Sunwell, the source of the high elves' magic in Quel'Thalas.
The Scourge's approach brought war to a kingdom that had endured for thousands of years. Quel'Thalas possessed ancient defenses, skilled rangers, and the power of the Sunwell, but Arthas forced his army through them. Sylvanas Windrunner resisted the invasion, only to be slain and enslaved as an undead servant. The assault carried the tragedy of Lordaeron into the northern forest kingdom and made the high elves victims of the same power that had destroyed their southern neighbors.
At the Sunwell, Arthas used its magic to bring Kel'Thuzad back as a lich. The ritual defiled a foundation of elven civilization in order to strengthen the Scourge. Restored to service, Kel'Thuzad would participate in the operations that brought the Burning Legion into the Third War, including the summoning of Archimonde at Dalaran. A sacred well created by the Highborne exiles thus became the setting for a triumph of their enemies.
The destruction of the Sunwell's former purity and the devastation of Quel'Thalas shaped the identity of its survivors. Kael'thas later named them blood elves in memory of those killed. The ritual's significance lies in that double consequence: it restored a major Scourge commander and wounded an entire people at the center of their magical and political existence.
