Full History

Illidan Stormrage entered the War of the Ancients with gifts and desires that set him apart even from his brother Malfurion. His altered magical sight and movements among the Highborne placed him close to the dangerous power surrounding the Well of Eternity. His actions contributed to the struggle over the Legion's gateway, but his fascination with arcane strength survived the invasion. That unresolved allegiance shaped his long punishment afterward.

Azshara's court was using the Well to draw Sargeras into Azeroth while the resistance sought to interrupt the spellwork. Illidan moved through this conflict with motives and methods unlike those of Malfurion and Tyrande, sometimes appearing to favor sources of power they considered intolerably dangerous. The War of the Ancients novels describe his engagement with the magical center of the conflict and the legacy of the artifacts bound to it. His presence brought promise and mistrust into the same story.

After the Sundering, Illidan preserved waters from the Well and used them to make another upon Mount Hyjal. For the surviving night elves, this was proof that the danger had not been overcome in his choices. His imprisonment followed, although Nordrassil would later stand over the new source of magic. Illidan's history is marked by abilities that could aid resistance while threatening to repeat its oldest disaster.
