The Dragon Soul became a contested power in the final struggle around the Well of Eternity. Illidan and Malfurion approached the battle by profoundly different means, yet both were caught in efforts to frustrate the Legion's attempt to bring Sargeras through the gateway. The artifact's fate was inseparable from the danger created by Neltharion's betrayal.
Earlier in the war, the Dragon Soul had been turned against the dragonflights it was supposed to help defend. Its immense force could not be treated as an uncomplicated weapon for either side. At the Well, the Highborne's spellwork and the invading demons drew the defenders toward an increasingly desperate decision: the portal had to be interrupted, even though doing so threatened the source of the empire's power and the land surrounding it.
The Legion's attempted entry for Sargeras failed, and the Well's collapse drove the Sundering. Illidan survived the ancient war, but his attachment to the kind of magic that had brought the catastrophe would soon produce another crisis at Mount Hyjal. The Dragon Soul remained an emblem of how the defense of Azeroth could be jeopardized by the ambitions of those entrusted with power.
