Jarod Shadowsong rose to command the night elven resistance after the loss of Kur'talos Ravencrest and further upheaval among its officers. The invasion had broken the old assumption that rank and royal authority would save the kaldorei. Jarod's task was to coordinate the survivors against an enemy advancing through their own empire's center.
By the time he assumed responsibility, the army was no longer an ordinary night elven force. The war had brought together defenders with different loyalties and eventually non-elven allies who had their own reasons to resist the Legion. Jarod had to lead a coalition in which the common threat mattered more than the privileges of Azshara's court. His leadership helped sustain operations even as the struggle moved toward the Well of Eternity.
The resistance could not restore the empire it was defending; the Well and the land around it would be transformed by the final catastrophe. Jarod's significance lies instead in preserving an organized defense long enough to challenge the invaders. His command was one of the ways the night elves survived the destruction of the political world from which their army had first emerged.
