Full History
After Neltharion betrayed the dragonflights, the Dragon Soul could no longer be treated as a weapon of common defense. The disc held a portion of the Aspects' power, but its creator had used it to threaten the very guardians who had helped make it. Their strength remained bound to something they could not safely wield.
The artifact's danger survived the War of the Ancients. Concealed and guarded, it became a temptation for those who sought power over dragons rather than protection from enemies. During the Second War, the Dragonmaw clan recovered the disc and used it to enslave Alexstrasza. The red dragons were forced into the service of an orcish army, carrying into a mortal war the consequences of a betrayal thousands of years old.
Only when the artifact's power was broken could the dragonflights begin to recover what they had lost. The Dragon Soul's history joined two distant ages: the war against the Burning Legion and the Horde's campaign in the Eastern Kingdoms. In both, the same weapon showed what happened when guardianship was twisted into control.
