Full History
The Dragon Soul did not cease to threaten Azeroth when the Burning Legion's first invasion ended. The surviving Aspects recognized the danger of leaving such concentrated power available to those who would misuse it. Early accounts describe measures that prevented dragons from freely wielding the artifact. Their caution could contain a weapon, but it could not erase the knowledge that the weapon existed.
Neltharion had gained the trust of his fellow guardians and turned their gifts against them during the War of the Ancients. The damage to their flights and to the ancient alliance was lasting. A protected or restricted Dragon Soul became a reminder that the Aspects themselves could not easily undo what had been wrought from their own strength. Subsequent generations of mortal powers would nonetheless seek ways to exploit the device.
The Second War brought the consequence into sharper focus when the Dragonmaw clan used the weapon associated with the Demon Soul to control Alexstrasza and her brood. The old safeguards had not ended its history. The available accounts support its continued danger and the Aspects' concern, but they do not justify inventing a single exact storage location or unrecorded sequence of transfers between every century.
