Dwarven sappers and craftsmen provided the Alliance with tools for siege warfare and difficult engineering tasks during the Second War. Their work complemented the Wildhammers' aerial service on gryphons. Together these contributions reflected different strengths among the dwarven peoples cooperating against the Horde.
The Alliance fought across fortresses, rivers, mountain passes, and coastlines, where courage alone could not remove every obstacle. Demolition specialists could break defensive positions and open routes for soldiers; craftsmen supplied equipment and repairs essential to sustained campaigns. The dwarves of Khaz Modan had long cultivated metalworking and practical engineering, making these talents useful to human commanders and their allies. Gryphon riders answered another threat entirely, engaging airborne enemies beyond the reach of ground troops.
The original Warcraft II account makes dwarven participation an important part of the Alliance's combined force. Their service belongs to the history of the Second War, not solely to the later state of Ironforge in the MMO. The battlefield roles of sappers and riders show how the Alliance became effective by joining specialized traditions from several kingdoms and clans.
