Quick Overview

The Sons of Lothar were cut off from Azeroth when Khadgar closed the Dark Portal during Draenor's destruction. The decision protected their homeland from the effects of Ner'zhul's catastrophic rituals. The expedition's surviving members remained beyond the gateway, becoming part of the unfinished history of the shattered remains of Draenor.

Full History

The Alliance expedition to Draenor was undertaken to prevent another invasion of Azeroth. Its soldiers followed the reopened Dark Portal and fought the remnants of Ner'zhul's Horde, whose leader was collecting relics to create new passages between worlds. Many who crossed had served in the Second War and knew what defeat would mean for the human kingdoms and their allies. Their mission was to stop the danger before it could once again reach their own lands.

Ner'zhul's attempt to open multiple portals unleashed a catastrophe that the expedition could no longer prevent. Draenor began to tear apart, and the forces released threatened to extend the disaster beyond the dying world. Khadgar understood that leaving the connection to Azeroth open could expose their home to ruin. He closed the gateway, sacrificing the expedition's route of return in order to prevent the catastrophe from spreading.

For the soldiers and their leaders, that decision was a profound reversal of the mission's original hope. They had crossed to save their homes and now found themselves unable to return to them. The land around them became the fractured realm known as the shattered remains of Draenor. The names of Turalyon, Alleria, Danath, Kurdran, and Khadgar became associated with a force whose fate was left unresolved for those living safely on Azeroth.

Their sacrifice contributed to the survival of the kingdoms that would later confront the Scourge and the Burning Legion in the Third War. Yet the cost remained visible in the absence of the veterans who had gone beyond the Portal. The Sons of Lothar embodied the long reach of the Second War: its final campaign had not merely defeated an army but had separated defenders from the world they defended. The original-era record should preserve that uncertainty rather than assign them later destinies.
