Quick Overview
Queen Azshara ruled the night-elven empire at its height, surrounded by the Highborne elite who drew tremendous power from the Well of Eternity. The court's unchecked magical ambition separated its rulers from those who questioned their path. That division became catastrophic when the Burning Legion used the court's spellwork to invade Azeroth.
Full History
The empire of the kaldorei achieved extraordinary reach under Queen Azshara. Its great cities and magical institutions were sustained by the power of the Well of Eternity, and the queen occupied a place of exceptional authority and prestige. Around her stood the Highborne, a privileged group whose command of arcane energies distinguished them from much of the population. Their influence shaped both the culture of the empire and its political decisions.
As the Highborne experimented with ever greater quantities of power, the Well became more than the source of the civilization's prosperity. It was also an opening that could be exploited by beings beyond Azeroth. Xavius, one of Azshara's closest advisers, helped prepare the spellwork through which Sargeras and his servants sought access to the world. The queen and her inner circle pursued this course while much of their own people remained unaware of its true danger.
The coming of the Burning Legion split the empire. Night elves such as Malfurion Stormrage, Tyrande Whisperwind, and the commanders of the resistance struggled to turn their people against an invasion connected to their own rulers. Ancient guardians and other peoples of Kalimdor joined the fight. Azshara's court remained centered upon the gateway, seeking to complete a plan that placed the entire world at risk.
The battle ended not in the survival of Azshara's imperial order but in the collapse of the Well and the Sundering of Kalimdor. The Highborne were divided between those destroyed or transformed and later survivors who faced exile for refusing to abandon arcane practice. Night-elven history thereafter remembered the old empire as both an extraordinary achievement and a warning about magical power concentrated in a court unwilling to recognize its consequences.
