Full History

The struggle for control of the Horde did not end when Orgrim Doomhammer replaced Blackhand as warchief. Blackhand's sons, Rend and Maim, retained followers of their own and formed the Black Tooth Grin clan from the old Blackrock ranks. They did not immediately challenge Doomhammer, but their ambitions remained a danger within the army he commanded.

During the Second War, the brothers helped devise the plan by which the Dragonmaw clan captured Alexstrasza, queen of the red dragonflight. Imprisoning a creature of such power gave the Horde a weapon unlike the armies of men, orcs or ogres. The Dragonmaw forced red dragons into service, and the sight of those creatures bearing riders over the battlefield changed the character of the war.

The scheme exposed the price of the Horde's internal rivalries. Leaders competing for position could still cooperate in the pursuit of devastating power, even when the means were enslavement and the violation of an ancient guardian's freedom. The dragons' captivity became one of the enduring crimes of the war, outlasting the immediate advantage it gave the Horde.
