Quick Overview

Grom Hellscream faced Mannoroth and killed the demon whose blood had cursed much of the orcish Horde. Thrall fought beside him in the attempt to end the corruption. Grom died during the confrontation, but his final act freed the orcs from the curse that had shaped their wars for generations.

Full History

The blood of Mannoroth had helped transform Draenor's clans into the savage army of the Old Horde. The bargain promised power but bound its recipients to the Burning Legion. Generations later, Thrall tried to restore shamanic traditions and a sense of identity independent from that curse. His hopes were threatened when Grom Hellscream and the Warsong clan again accepted demonic power in Ashenvale, leading to the death of Cenarius.

Thrall intervened to save the Warsong leader from corruption. The struggle brought them face to face with Mannoroth, the demon whose blood had played such a central role in the Horde's fall. The encounter was both a direct battle and a reckoning with history. Grom had taken part in the old Horde's corruption and had again surrendered to the demon's power; now he chose to fight its source.

Grom struck down Mannoroth, but the victory killed him. The demon's death broke the blood curse that had bound the orcs, opening the possibility that Thrall's New Horde could pursue its own future without the supernatural domination that had defined so much of the past. Grom's sacrifice did not erase the destruction committed under the curse, nor did it restore Cenarius or the countless lives lost in earlier wars.

The event remains one of the defining turning points of the Third War. Thrall gained a people freed from the Legion's binding influence, but he lost a powerful companion and one of the Horde's most storied warriors. The contrast between Grom's earlier choices and his final act became central to the orcs' understanding of honor, responsibility, and liberation. The future Horde could not undo its history, but it no longer had to remain enslaved by the demon who had shaped it.
