Grom Hellscream's struggle with the demonic blood curse reached its terrible turning point in Ashenvale. His Warsong drank Mannoroth's blood again and slew Cenarius, gaining power while surrendering freedom. Thrall refused to accept that bondage as the orcs' fate. Grom ultimately killed Mannoroth at the cost of his own life, ending the demon's hold over his people.
The Warsong had followed the New Horde to Kalimdor, but their violent encounter with the night elves and the demands of the forest war exposed old habits. Mannoroth offered the strength associated with the first corruption of the clans, repeating the bargain that had transformed Draenor's orcs. The death of Cenarius was not a triumphant defense of nature or a liberation; it demonstrated how renewed dependence on demon blood could turn a people against the world they hoped to inhabit.
Thrall and Grom confronted the demon, and Grom's final act shattered the blood curse. The result did not undo Cenarius's death or the damage in Ashenvale. It did, however, remove a central instrument by which the Legion had bound the orcs across generations. Grom's legacy joined responsibility for a grievous deed to the sacrifice that freed his people from repeating it.
