Full History
Deathknell received undead who had awakened free of the Lich King's direct control, uncertain of the world into which they had returned. Mordo and Shadow Priest Sarvis explained their condition and the allegiance of the Forsaken under Sylvanas Windrunner. The settlement was a beginning for the newly freed, not a celebration of a war already won. Beyond it, Tirisfal remained full of danger.
The Scourge had destroyed Lordaeron and raised many of its dead into service. Sylvanas's break with the Lich King created space for those who could reclaim their will to organize as a separate people. Deathknell placed that new political reality beside the personal shock of awakening undead. The instructions offered to newcomers joined immediate survival with the larger struggle to secure the Forsaken's position around the ruins of the former human capital.
The original starter quest presents circumstances and possible actions for a beginning character. It does not designate a single completed path as established history. The important narrative is the emergence of self-directed Forsaken from the armies that once controlled them. Deathknell marks the transition from undead servitude to membership in a precarious new society.
