Full History
Deathknell lay among the graveyards and small settlements of Tirisfal, in the shadow of Lordaeron's capital. Before the plague, its dead belonged to ordinary families and communities within the northern kingdom. The Scourge's conquest changed that simple relationship between the living and their ancestors by drawing the fallen back into service against their own people.
When the Lich King's control weakened, Sylvanas Windrunner and others broke free. Some undead regained their will without regaining their lives, homes or former place in human society. Deathknell became a place where such newly awakened Forsaken were gathered and guided. Their condition did not make them obedient servants of the Scourge, yet many living survivors feared them all the same.
The village's new role grew directly from Lordaeron's destruction. Its graves had once marked the end of life; now they became the beginning of a difficult second existence. The Forsaken who rose there inherited a country already claimed by enemies and had to decide for themselves what loyalty and freedom could mean after death.
