During the Burning Legion's invasion, Hamuul Runetotem encountered Malfurion Stormrage, the night elves' foremost druid. Their meeting became an unexpected point of contact between peoples with very different histories. Malfurion instructed Hamuul in the ways of the wild, and the tauren elder carried those teachings into the world that survived the war. From a military catastrophe came a renewal of tauren druidic learning.
Hamuul had known Cairne Bloodhoof since childhood and remained closely bound to the tauren community. The Horde's arrival on Kalimdor brought the tauren into the struggle against the Legion, which threatened night elf forests and the wider continent alike. Malfurion's role in opposing that invasion made his instruction especially consequential: it joined knowledge long cultivated by the night elves with a tauren reverence for the natural world and the Earth Mother.
By the original World of Warcraft era, Hamuul was recognized as the first tauren druid in nearly twenty generations. The 2004 manual makes this unusual interval part of his significance, rather than suggesting an uninterrupted recent tauren druidic order. He continued to support Cairne and to teach other tauren. His story marks a durable consequence of cooperation at the end of the Third War, without turning the meeting into an invented scene of initiation or agreement.
