Full History
Blackhand's sons Rend and Maim commanded the Black Tooth Grin, a force associated with guarding the Dark Portal during the Second War. Their assignment placed them at the link between Azeroth and Draenor, a route upon which the Horde's campaigns depended. Defending that passage was both a military duty and a way to maintain the influence of Blackhand's surviving line. The sons' loyalty and ambitions remained entangled with the larger Horde.
Blackhand had fallen when Orgrim Doomhammer seized the warchief's position. Rend and Maim nevertheless retained followers who honored his memory, and their clan played a role in the politics of the invasion. The original Warcraft II manual locates the Black Tooth Grin's responsibilities around the Portal and also connects its chieftains to the plan to capture Alexstrasza. They were therefore more than anonymous gate guards: their schemes touched both the logistics and the most brutal weapons of the war.
The exact timing of the clan's split and its later alignment requires reconciliation among early sources. That uncertainty should not erase what the manual explicitly reports. The Black Tooth Grin defended a strategic threshold and helped show how allegiance to a former warchief could survive a violent transfer of power within the Horde.
