Full History

Alexstrasza's captivity at Grim Batol turned the red dragonflight into a weapon of the Horde. The Dragonmaw clan's warlock Nekros Skullcrusher held the Demon Soul, an artifact whose power reached back to Neltharion's betrayal during the War of the Ancients. As long as it remained intact, the Dragonqueen could be compelled to obey.

Rhonin, Vereesa Windrunner, Falstad Wildhammer, and their allies became involved in the effort to free her. Their struggle converged with Deathwing's designs upon the red flight and with the Dragonmaw's determination to keep its greatest prize. The artifact's destruction broke the power used to imprison Alexstrasza and restored the portions of strength that the other Aspects had surrendered long ago.

The rescue ended more than one prisoner's ordeal. The red dragons were released from coerced service, the Dragonmaw lost the foundation of its dragon-riding power, and Deathwing faced the consequences of a weapon he had once fashioned for his own supremacy. A betrayal from the ancient past had finally been undone through the actions of mortals who refused to leave the Dragonqueen in chains.
