A small commission carried real weight in the Argent Dawn's struggle against the Scourge. Volunteers who wore it could gather Scourgestones from undead enemies and bring them to the order's officers. These objects provided a recognizable measure of service in a war whose front lines rarely moved decisively. The custom joined battlefield activity with the Dawn's persistent need to organize and reward its supporters.

The devastation of Lordaeron had left undead threats spread across wide territories, and no single victory could secure the region. Argent outposts at the Bulwark and elsewhere therefore relied on continued participation rather than a fixed muster for one campaign. Officers distributed commissions, while quartermasters supplied recognition for those who contributed to the fight. The system also gave an individual traveler a means to enter a mission extending well beyond personal adventure.
