Quick Overview
The Bulwark stands where Tirisfal Glades gives way to the Western Plaguelands, at the boundary between lands held by the Forsaken and territory devastated by the Scourge. The Argent Dawn established a presence there to confront undeath beyond the border. Orcs and other members of the order could serve beside people from rival factions because the Plaguelands threatened them all. The post became a visible sign that the struggle against the Scourge crossed ordinary political divisions.
Full History
Lordaeron's destruction did not end at the walls of its capital. The plague consumed farmlands, villages and roads across the north, leaving the western approaches to the old kingdom under the threat of the Scourge. When the Forsaken seized freedom from the Lich King's control, they inherited lands bordered by undead forces that did not recognize their independence. The road westward into the Plaguelands remained dangerous to anyone attempting to cross it.
The Argent Dawn placed defenders at the Bulwark on this frontier. The order gathered people willing to oppose the Scourge even when their former allegiances placed them on opposing sides of the human-orc wars. Such cooperation was unusual in a world divided between the Alliance and Horde, but the undead armies advancing through Lordaeron were a threat that neither side could afford to ignore.
The presence of Argent personnel at the Bulwark connected the Forsaken frontier with a wider campaign across the Plaguelands. From this position the Dawn could support those moving into ruined territories and maintain a line against threats approaching Tirisfal. Its members served a cause larger than control of a border crossing.
The Bulwark was therefore born of Lordaeron's failure to protect its own heartland, and of the determination of survivors and new allies to defend what remained. It marked not the end of the war against undeath, but the place where that war became impossible to overlook.
