Armed with arcane magic from the Well of Eternity, early kaldorei rapidly dismantle troll defenses and supply networks, splintering the older empires. ” That account follows Ancient troll empires (unnamed leaders) as its main perspective. Ancestral empires, war with the aqir, and the elven magical revolution recast troll history without asserting unproven ancestry. The Gurubashi and Amani territories fracture; Zandalari traditions remain as a source of continuity. Troll societies precede the night-elven empire; later Amani and Gurubashi traditions descend from these great societies. The ancient troll powers push against the insectoid aqir; the details should follow the original compendium rather than Chronicle. Some trolls believe the nocturnal humanoids transformed by the first Well of Eternity were trolls. Early Blizzard lore calls this plausible but explicitly unproven; it is an in-world belief, not an established ancestry.

Another stage of this history concerns gurubashi and amani survivors rebuild after the sundering: The ancient empires are shattered and scattered; their surviving peoples attempt to reclaim land and repair their devastated settlements.

The original-era reading also carries this qualification: This does not establish the elves' biological ancestry.

The elves’ territorial expansion into the north challenged Amani forest trolls who considered those forests ancestral lands. Later human–elven cooperation completed a devastating reversal for the empire. These episodes explain changes in the political geography of the Eastern Kingdoms, whereas the ancient Kith’ix conflict belongs to a separate epoch and should not be used as a substitute explanation for the Troll Wars.
