Quick Overview
Orgrim Doomhammer killed Blackhand and seized command of the Horde after the first warchief's leadership came under challenge. The change weakened the influence of Gul'dan's hidden council but did not end the invasion of Azeroth. Orgrim would lead the Horde through much of the Second War before his eventual defeat and captivity.
Full History
Blackhand had commanded the unified Horde as its first great warchief, but his authority was entwined with the schemes of Gul'dan and the Shadow Council. Many orcs had followed the Horde into Azeroth expecting conquest and glory, while the true objectives of their hidden advisers remained less visible. Orgrim Doomhammer, a warrior of the Blackrock clan and an old friend of Durotan, grew increasingly hostile to the arrangement that allowed warlocks to direct the fate of the clans.
Orgrim challenged and killed Blackhand, taking the title of warchief. His rise changed the military leadership of the Horde and offered an opportunity to confront the Shadow Council. Gul'dan's position was threatened as the new warchief moved against the hidden network that had manipulated the old command. The change was a violent internal reckoning, not a reconciliation with the kingdoms the Horde had attacked.
Under Orgrim's leadership the war continued. Stormwind fell, and the Horde later advanced north into the lands defended by the Alliance of Lordaeron. Orgrim proved a capable strategist and a determined opponent, but the divisions inherited from the original warlock leadership remained dangerous. Gul'dan's pursuit of the Tomb of Sargeras and the desertion of vital forces would help undermine the Horde at a critical stage of the Second War.
Orgrim's defeat did not make him a simple symbol of demonic subservience. Later, the young Thrall encountered him and inherited both the title of warchief and a broader struggle over orcish identity. His overthrow of Blackhand thus stands at a transition: the Horde remained a conquering force, but its leadership was no longer entirely content to serve Gul'dan's secret ambitions. The conflict between military honor and inherited corruption persisted long after Blackhand's death.
