Full History

Illidan Stormrage survived the Sundering with a vision of magic that his fellow night elves regarded as dangerously familiar. Carrying waters from the first Well of Eternity, he created another source of arcane power upon Mount Hyjal. The act promised renewed strength but recalled the obsession that had opened the way for the Legion. His own people condemned him to long imprisonment.

The original Well's destruction had left the survivors of Kalimdor with bitter memories of Highborne ambition. Illidan's decision therefore struck at the heart of the new society's effort to reject uncontrolled arcane practice. Malfurion and the night-elven leaders viewed the creation of a second Well as a risk too great to excuse by its possible benefits. Illidan remained alive but confined, with centuries passing while the world outside his prison changed.

The guardians later planted Nordrassil above the new Well, and the dragonflights' blessings tied the great tree to night-elven longevity and the Emerald Dream. That accommodation did not vindicate Illidan's methods or erase his sentence. It revealed the uneasy legacy of his deed: a source of power his society feared and yet ultimately lived beside. When he emerged again during the Third War, the same tension between useful strength and forbidden methods remained unresolved.
