Quick Overview
The Scourge’s march through Quel’Thalas and Lordaeron culminated in a ritual at Dalaran that brought Archimonde into Azeroth. Arthas and Kel’Thuzad overcame the city’s magical defenders and completed the summoning on behalf of the Burning Legion. Archimonde’s destruction of Dalaran made plain that the Scourge had been preparing the way for a still greater enemy. The war then turned toward Kalimdor and the World Tree at Mount Hyjal.
Full History
By the time the Scourge approached Dalaran, Lordaeron had already suffered a devastating collapse. Arthas, once a prince sworn to defend his people, had become a death knight serving the Lich King. Kel’Thuzad, restored to undeath through the Sunwell of Quel’Thalas, directed the necromantic work needed for the next stage of the campaign. Their objective was not simply to seize another city. Dalaran guarded magical learning and resources that the Scourge required to summon the Burning Legion’s commander into the world.
The assault brought the undead against the Kirin Tor and the city’s formidable magical protections. Antonidas, one of Dalaran’s greatest archmages, stood among its defenders. The Scourge overcame that resistance and seized the means to complete the ritual. The moment joined two conflicts that might otherwise seem separate: the spread of undead plague through the human kingdoms and the ancient Legion’s renewed effort to invade Azeroth. The Scourge had prepared a breach through which demons could follow.
Archimonde’s arrival transformed the scale of the disaster. Having been called into Azeroth, the demon commander destroyed Dalaran in a display of power remembered from Warcraft III’s undead campaign. A city whose mages had shaped the history of the human kingdoms was shattered after its defenders failed to stop the summoning. The event also exposed the Scourge’s place in a wider plan: the undead army was not the final enemy, but an instrument that helped weaken Azeroth ahead of an open Legion assault.
Dalaran’s fall did not conclude the invasion. With Archimonde leading the Legion, the immediate struggle moved west toward Kalimdor, where the night elves guarded Nordrassil. That campaign would eventually force humans, orcs, and night elves into a desperate common defense. Dalaran was thus both a tragedy in the history of magic and the hinge between the ruin of Lordaeron and the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Its destruction marked the hour when a hidden war of plague became a war against the Legion itself.
