Full History
Dalaran became a home for human mages when the study of arcane power outgrew the old courts of Arathor. High elven instruction helped its wizards accomplish feats that earlier human kingdoms could scarcely imagine, yet unchecked magic carried dangers its practitioners did not fully understand. Demons were drawn toward the disturbances opened by reckless spellcasting. The city's scholars eventually organized themselves into orders capable of guarding, examining and regulating the powers they had unleashed.
The Kirin Tor emerged as Dalaran's most influential circle of magi, preserving spellcraft and gathering knowledge that could be used either to defend the world or imperil it. Their city took part in the Alliance's struggles against the orcs, and Jaina Proudmoore trained within its magical tradition. As plague spread through Lordaeron, Dalaran sent warning of the danger and helped investigate the threat with Arthas Menethil. The realm of wizardry could not keep the catastrophe beyond its walls.
Arthas later returned as a servant of the Scourge, attacking Dalaran for the Book of Medivh. Archmage Antonidas fell during the defense, and Kel'Thuzad used the stolen book to summon Archimonde. The demon lord destroyed the city with terrifying ease. For the Kirin Tor, the Third War turned generations of guarded knowledge and ambition into a struggle to survive the loss of their greatest sanctuary.
